The National Theatre (Národní divadlo) in Prague is a symbol of the independence and national status of the Czech nation. It was built thanks to generous donations from the nation. The foundation stone was laid in 1868.
Today, the National Theatre consists of three artistic ensembles: opera, ballet, and drama. The theatre's repertoire relies on both the rich national tradition and current world events. There are approximately 60 compositions in the repertoire. The operas are primarily classical, whereas the ballets include Mowgli, Romeo and Juliet, Carmen, Snow White, and so on. The works are adaptations of Shakespeare and Tchaikovsky.
