The castle's owners varied over time. During the battles, Bona Sforza created a plan to protect Kaunas. When she left, she sent her men in the castle dungeon, instructing them to protect the city. The troops, of course, became ghosts.

A story from several centuries ago proves this. A man drove a wagon full of hay from across the Neris. As he approached the castle, everything was shrouded in fog. A soldier wearing ancient armour approached the man. The man crossed himself and suspected he had consumed bad vodka: "Now it started haunting..." The soldier turned to face the man. He begged him to leave his hay for their horses, explained that he was a Queen Bona soldier, and cautioned him that the man was out of luck because he had discovered a major secret. He found out that they were here to defend Kaunas in the event of a disaster, and the man would now have to keep this secret for the rest of his life, not telling anyone. Otherwise, he will die. The soldier vanished. The man was overjoyed that this terrifying hallucination had finally ended. When the man turned back and discovered no more hay in the wagon, he realized he was dealing with a genuine ghost...

The man, like all of God's creatures, had reached the end of his life. The man called his relatives and finally revealed the secret: they lived in a safe city under the protection of Queen Bona's guards. And Bona has left these warriors in each castle of Panemune...
