History recalls a magnificent duke who may be restless in an undiscovered burial place. There are numerous legends in which GDL Vytautas emerges in all his glory. Kaunas experienced a golden age during Vytautas' reign.

According to Jesuit historian Albert Vijūkas-Kojelavičius, during a confrontation with the Tatars at Vorskla, Grand Duke Vytautas of Lithuania was battered and almost drowned in the river. In thanks to the Virgin Mary for saving him, he promised to build a church on the riverbank. Vytautas was granted life in GDL, therefore he repaid the favour by establishing Virgin Mary churches at Trakai, Veliuona, Kernave, and Kaunas itself. Unfortunately, we still do not know where Vytautas the Great is buried. As a result, his wandering ghost continues to roam the Grand Duchy of Lithuania's territory from the Baltic to the Black Sea, willingly narrating tales of his outstanding adventures and battles.
