The oldest religious structure in Prague is St. George's Basilica, which is significant for a variety of reasons. It was founded in 920 A.D. Almost immediately, the remains of Vratislav the First of Bohemia and the first martyr Ludmila were interred there. The church was expanded in 973, but a fire in 1142 badly damaged it. The reconstructed church is still standing today.
Numerous modifications were made over the years, the most famous being the two white towers and two rows of Romanesque windows built-in 1142. The modest church of St Ludmila, which also houses her grave, was built in the 13th century.
St George's Convent for Women has a wonderful collection of 19th century art. On the ground floor there are very important baroque works of art. Do not miss the opportunity to see the art of Jan Kupecký and Ignaz Platzer at the St. George's Convent.
