The square with archaeological digs (in front of T. Daugirdas restaurant) is dubbed "Kaunas Pompeii". This area of the ancient town, together with its structures, is one of the oldest. The initial residents were German craftsmen and merchants who constructed buildings in the German Gothic style. This layer, discovered in the plaza since the 15th century, contains the ruins of a brewery furnace complex.

This is where the brick city began to form. The ruins of a cellar with a cylinder vault depict 17th-century city architecture. According to the data from the 1796 Kaunas city plan, this land, along with all the structures, may have belonged to the city's executioner. As a result, the remnants of the Kaunas prison were most likely discovered for a particular reason. Today, we can only imagine the vibrations in the air surrounding the executioner's home.

What is the further fate of the area? When the Russian tsar's army invaded Kaunas, its entire territory was burned. Until the 18th century the middle buildings were completely abandoned.
