Once upon a time (a few hundred years ago), rumours began circulating in the surrounding area related to numerous hauntings, particularly on the Panemune coast. Most of the time, these spirits had an utterly unusual appearance for the Lithuanian region. Rumours spread from the many areas of Panemunė over time, despite first being ignored. The number of cases was particularly high around Kaunas.

Warfare became nearly routine over centuries. So far, researchers have discovered several tombs during their excavations. Many Romans have been identified as a result of their burial, which included all of their valuables, and many remains. Viking tombs have also been discovered, as they were buried with their horses, which were much larger than those in Lithuanian territories. So, might the hauntings be triggered by all of the fallen warriors who never returned to their homelands? Perhaps their souls still haven't discovered a secure harbour in their search for their place.

But is this the only reasonable explanation for the abundance of true ghost stories at Kaunas Castle and other old medieval sites? Following the March 1362 combat, the land of Kaunas Castle was strewn with the disfigured bodies of the deceased. Crows began hovering above them, croaking and summoning their tribesmen to a grisly feast.

If Vaidotas' army had won the war, such myths might not exist... The soldiers would then have had the opportunity to collect all of the spoils of war, including weapons, helmets, armour, and, of course, the injured. After all, this was already the mentality during Mindaugas' reign: if it is not possible to bury the wounded right away, turn one's soldiers prone so that the crows do not peck out their eyes. Otherwise, the blind warriors will roam in that world's unending darkness, bringing no peace to the living. Can we be certain that there is no longer anyone here? Probably not. Probably the Vaidotas warriors are still wandering the castle grounds.
