It is one of the oldest preserved wooden Kurhauses in Lithuania. Since its opening in 1855, it has been different from other similar institutions. It had neither a gambling house nor a bank, but hosted concerts of serious music. The majority of visitors after the opening of Kurhaus were St. Petersburg High Society. They came not only to listen to the most famous entertainers of the time but also to show off their outfits. It was said that if you had not shown a new dress in Birštonas, no one would have seen it. The first Lithuanian diet restaurant was opened here.
Next to the spa house is a fine example of the small-scale architecture of the resort - the white, classically shaped "Birutė" spring building. During the warm season, water flows from the mouth of a mythical creature. This was a popular spot for photographers during the interwar period: the elegant ladies and gentlemen posed here. Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas, who believed that Birštonas water could improve health for up to eight years, named the spring after Birutė. Birštonas springs were destroyed after the construction of the Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Station. Since then, water has been supplied by deep boreholes throughout the resort. Birštonas has 29 of them.
